2026 Flat TV vs Foldable Display Tier - Samsung OLED Innovation

2026 Flat TVs vs. Foldable Displays: Samsung OLED Innovation!

Hello everyone! 👋 I've gotten totally lost in another crazy display story! The crease-less foldable OLED technology that Samsung revealed at CES 2026 is seriously amazing! To be honest, I’ve had experience using a foldable phone, and I was a little disappointed by that noticeable "crease." 😭 But now that there's a possibility that crease concerns might be alleviated, I'm so excited I just had to write about it.

Crease, Farewell? Samsung’s Innovation

At CES 2026, Samsung Display showcased a new OLED panel with a noticeably reduced crease compared to existing foldable displays. According to CNET, the "crease" that we've seen on foldable phones seems to have almost disappeared! Samsung plans to apply this technology to future foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8. As reported by Android Headlines, the new technology was made possible thanks to thinner hinges and hidden cameras.

To be honest, I’ve felt like foldable phones had a cheap feel to them because of that crease. 😅 Of course, the magical experience of folding and unfolding was great, but that distinct crease did detract from the design’s overall finish. Now, if this crease problem is resolved, the appeal of foldable phones will become even greater.

Flat TVs vs. Foldable Displays: Which is Better?

But just because foldable displays are innovative doesn’t mean flat displays suddenly become obsolete. 🤔 Flat displays have been used for so long, and they clearly have the advantages of being technically stable and affordable.

So, I'm going to evaluate these two categories using a tier system. Please keep in mind that this is my personal opinion!

Tier Evaluation

  • S Tier: Top-Tier Technology (Future-Oriented) - Foldable OLED (Crease-less): It's still in its early stages and will be expensive, but the potential is enormous. If foldable phones offer both convenience and enhanced visual finish, an S tier is a given.
  • A Tier: Excellent Performance (Currently Mainstream) - Flat OLED: Provides excellent picture quality and relatively stable performance. For those who enjoy gaming or prioritize movie watching, it’s still the best choice.
  • B Tier: Practical Choice (Value for Money) - Flat LCD: Affordable and offers sufficiently satisfying performance for general use. Recommended for those who prioritize value for money.
  • C Tier: Universal Choice (Entry-Level) - Old Flat TVs: Almost not used anymore, but could be considered only if your budget is extremely limited.

Comparison Table: Flat vs. Foldable

  • Durability: 🥇 Very High (Long-lasting) / 🥈 Relatively Low (Due to folding structure)
  • Lifespan: 🥇 Very Long (Typically 5+ years) / 🥈 Relatively Short (Subject to change based on technological advancements)
  • Price: 🥉 Affordable / 🏅 Very Expensive (Due to development costs and production difficulty)
  • Picture Quality: 🥈 Excellent (OLED standard) / 🥈 Good (Will likely improve further if the crease is improved)
  • Portability: 🥉 Average / 🥇 Very Convenient (Can be folded for portability)

I'm a Little Disappointed About This...

Of course, foldable displays aren’t all-powerful. They still have lower durability compared to flat displays, and they’re quite expensive. The fact that their lifespan could be shortened by the number of times they’re folded and unfolded is also quite concerning. Android Authority mentioned this point as well.

In Conclusion

Samsung’s crease-less foldable OLED technology is an important step demonstrating the innovation of display technology. While there are still challenges to overcome, I think foldable displays could completely replace flat displays in the future. Of course, the choice will depend on individual preferences. I especially liked this aspect! I'm excited about the further expansion of foldable phone possibilities.
